10 Activities to Share With Your Senior Mom During the Pandemic

It has never been more important to show the mothers in our lives just how much they matter to us. Here are some ideas to celebrate our senior mom during the COVID-19 pandemic – even though Mother’s Day has passed.

Alcohol-Free Happy Hour at Home

Just because the bars and restaurants are closed doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice drink with your mom at her place or yours. These mocktails are a refreshing and health-conscious spin on old favorites.

Take a Hike

No matter what speed or distance your mother can handle, a nice stroll through the park or garden can be a much-needed break from the mundane. Remember to go slow and take time to smell the flowers!

If your mother is one of our lovely residents, and restricted visitation makes this impossible during the COVID-19 pandemic, try visiting her through her window or set up a Skype chat!

Movie Night

Pick out some of mom’s favorite flicks and watch them together. If distance is a barrier, create a “watch party” online so that you can have a shared experience from afar.

Solve a Puzzle Together

Puzzles are often used as complementary strategies in conjunction with mental health services; they help keep the mind spry and active. You can even create a custom puzzle from a favorite family photo to help spark some great memories!

Museum “Visit”

Does your mom have a favorite museum that they like to visit or that she has been meaning to check out? It is sure to be more enjoyable with you at her side. With local venues likely closed, many are offering free virtual visits that can be fun to “walk through.”

Share In Each Other’s Hobbies!

What does your mom like to do for fun? Show an interest in her passions and let her teach you her favorite craft or game. Princeton Health Care Center’s Activities Department always has something to learn!

Enjoy a Nice Meal Together!

A great meal can nourish the soul as much as it nourishes the body. Visit your mother’s favorite restaurant and get some delicious food to go. You can also make a special family recipe with a lovely dessert. Maybe even have a picnic or surprise her with breakfast in bed.

Have a Spa Day!

Everyone likes to look their best, even if they have nowhere special to go. Princeton Health Care Center’s Beauty & Barber Salon helps our residents keep their personal style new and fresh! You can gift your mother with a gift certificate to get a cut, color, or perm once everything is back up and running!

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

Sheltering in place has probably given you a lot of opportunities to go through your closet, attic, and basement. Get out those old family photos, pick out your favorites, and make a mini-album or book for your mom to cherish. You can bring it to her, send it by mail, or even create a special photo album online for the whole family to sign.

Video Surprise Party

If you simply cannot be with your mother no matter how much you want to, you can still make sure she isn’t alone. Coordinate with other family members to create a video conference call so that she can see your faces. You can send gifts ahead of time, or show her what you have gotten her so she has something to look forward to in the near future.
